Hazy dark amber caramel color with poor activity. Creamy and frothy beige 3 finger rocky head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with shy legs. Flavors of caramel, light orange and lemon, sweet grains and herbal hops. Slick and smooth medium to full body with prickly and crispy carbonation. Light strength finish, bready with slightly flowery and leafy hops. More sugary than bitter. Being overly accessible, it lacks flavors and character. Though the body is well rounded and well refreshing. Overall average quality craft.

Hazy golden color with low activity. Soft creamy light beige 2 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, with average legs but decent swirl reaction. Flavors of caramel, barley, lemon, and cascade hops. Slick and smooth medium body with a moderate crisp, a bit oily. Light strength finish, grainy with soft dry floral hops, slightly vegetal, and some lemony yeast. Highly refreshing and accessible, lager type of strength and feel. Good tenderness and balance. A bit shy with the intensity. Overall decent quality craft.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4 = 3.91/5

Veiled and cloudy dark straw color, almost golden, with lots of activity. Thick foamy, almost creamy, light beige 3 finger head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with average legs. Flavors of sweet grains, caramel, orange, grapefruits, wheat, Wild yeast, herbal and floral hops. Slick and smooth full body with prickly carbonation and a sharp crisp. Medium to strong strength finish, moderately tropical, slightly leafy and piney but more flowery, with a light straw and bardyard effect. A bit spicy in a coriander kind of way. Very close to an IPA in style, even closer to Belgian IPA so I’m not convinced about calling this an American interpretation. Although it’s highly refreshing and well polished, highly drinkable and pleasant. Really good balance. Overall high quality craft.

Slightly hazy light amber color with dense activity. Thick foamy, a bit creamy, beige 3 finger head, lasting around 15 minutes, with decent legs. Flavors of caramel, lemon, sweet grains dominant barley, floral and herbal hops. Slick medium to full body with light prickly carbonation but a good crisp. Light to medium strength finish, bready with decent butterscotch feel, balanced hops, soft leafy and faintly flowery. More sugary than bitter. Nice butterscotch sent though. Lacks a lot of complexity and intensity, nothing amazing nor special to notes except easy to down. Overall average quality.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 = 3.93/5

Clear golden color with moderate activity and a haze of yeast. Slightly creamy and frothy beige 2-3 finger head, lasting around 10 minutes, with serious legs and a good swirl effect. Flavors of pineapples, mangos, grapefruits, lemon, caramel, sweet grains, ginger, wild yeast, floral hops. Smooth oily full body with a moderately sharp crisp. Medium strength finish, highly tropical and sweet, ending with flowery dry hops. Slightly tongue numbing, still pretty accessible and well intensified. Impressive pale ale that is close to the line of an IPA, while still remaining true to the style from a highly balanced finish. Gets a bit more intense with the yeast, more citrusy with almost Saison qualities. Good freshness and filling, yet delicately super well rounded body. Overall excellent quality craft.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75 = 3.54/5

Hazy golden color with moderate activity. Soft creamy and frothy light beige 2-3 finger head, lasting around 10 minutes, with weak legs. Flavors of sweet grains, barley, caramel, light butter, soft grapefruits and orange, wheat and dry noble hops. Slick and smooth full body with a sharp crispy carbonation. Medium strength finish, a bit tropical and dominantly hoppy with a dry leafy feel. Nice intensity, going for an IPA, yet still feels APA. Good balance and taste. Filling and pleasant. The smell is a little dull though. Overall high quality craft.

Rype – Trailway Brewing Co.

Pale Ale Tropicale pas amère, 5%, de Fredericton. (NB Liquor)

Tropical Pale Ale, 5%, from Fredericton, NB.
look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 = 3.96/5

Deeply hazy, almost opaque dark gold color, with a caramel murky floating yeast cloud. Slightly creamy beige 2-3 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, with decent legs. Flavors of pineapples, mangos, orange, coriander, caramel, sweet grains and herbal hops. Slick and smooth full body with a moderate crisp. Medium strength finish, indeed has a nice ripe tropical fruity juicy feel, with some wheat and balanced leafy hops. Highly accessible, well interpreted APA that is fruity but not bitter, so you can really say this is not an IPA. The balance is really impressive, I’ve never tasted a Pale Ale like that. Pleasant to drink and quite delicious, filling and fresh, although the body gets a little thin quite fast. Overall excellent quality craft.
